Data: Asda tea bags beat big-name brands in consumer ranking
Asda’s own-label tea bags have been chosen as the consumer favourite in a new ranking, beating popular big-name brands.
According to a Which? blind taste test of 79 tea drinkers rating 12 teas from supermarkets such as Sainsbury’s and Tesco, alongside PG Tips, Tetley, Twinings and Yorkshire Tea, Asda Everyday tea bags received the highest score of 72%.
The consumer watchdog said the product was awarded high marks for aroma, appearance and more than two-thirds thought the colour was “just right”, alongside it being one of the cheapest options in the test at £1.20 for a box of 80 tea bags.

PG Tips Original, Sainsbury’s Red Label and Tetley Original all came in at second place, with scores of 71%.
Meanwhile, Aldi Diplomat Red Label, Co-op 99 Blend Fairtrade Tea, Waitrose Essential Original Blend Tea Bags and Yorkshire Tea all received a score of 70%, with half or more than half of taste testers approving of the flavour of each.
Slightly lower on the lineup was Lidl Knightsbridge Red Label Tea Bags at 69%, which despite being the cheapest on test at £2.19 for 240 bags, half of the panel said they wanted a stronger brew.
Morrisons Everyday Tea received a score of 68%, followed by Tesco Original Tea at 67%, which some tasters said was too dark in colour and not strong enough, with Twinings Everyday also at 67% with less than half of the panel approving of the flavour.
