Ocado and Lidl continued to be the fastest-growing retailers, with sales increasing by 13.5 per cent and 8.7 per cent, respectively, in the 12 weeks to 14 June, according to the latest figures from Worldpanel.

Ocado’s overall share increased by 0.2 percentage points to 2.2 per cent of the market.

Discounter Lidl experienced a market share rise of 0.5 per cent to 8.7 per cent, marking the highest increase across any retailer this month.

Co-op returned to market share growth with sales increasing by 2.7 per cent, while Sainsbury’s experienced a sales increase of 2 per cent.

Tesco remained the retailer with the largest market share at 28 per cent, with sales going up by 1.2 per cent.

Sales at Asda continued to decrease by 3.6 per cent, with the supermarket retailer holding an 11.5 per cent market share.

The sales at Waitrose, Morrisons and Iceland went up by 1.7 per cent, 1.4 per cent and 2.2 per cent, respectively.

The data found that like-for-like grocery inflation increased by 3 per cent, which offset concerns about the impact of the conflict in the Middle East transferring to Britain’s supermarket shelves.

Additionally, the no-and low-alcohol drinks category went up by 23 per cent, which performed ahead of the beer and cider category, which experienced an increase of 6 per cent.

The amount of grocery spend on promotion increased for the 39th consecutive month, with 30.4 per cent of sales on some form of discount.

The warm weather also led to fresh prepared salad and chilled dip sales growing by 13 per cent as households were hosting social occasions.

Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Worldpanel by Numerator, said:  “Barbecue staples performing well and shoppers turning to healthier options are a common summer trend, and we can expect to see this continue over the rest of June and into July, with the warm weather forecast to continue.”

“Nearly a third of all grocery spending is now on promotion, and that upward streak shows no sign of breaking. Combined with strong online growth, it points to shoppers who know what they want and are increasingly confident about where and how to find the best deal. In short, retailers are having to compete hard for that summer shop.”
