Tesco has said it is “seeking alternatives” after confirming that some of the fruit it sells is unsuitable for those following a vegan diet.
The UK’s biggest supermarket has been called out for confirming its oranges are labelled non-vegan because they are treated with shellac, a resin secreted by the female lac bug. A number of other citrus fruits including lemons and limes are also affected by the practice.
The post-harvest treatment applies the cosmetic and protective wax to fruit after harvesting to help keep the fruit fresh, but means that those following a vegan lifestyle would be unable to consume or buy affected produce.

Tesco has previously said that all its oranges are suitable for vegans to eat but some are labelled ‘non-vegan’ due to the wax treatment. It said that using shellac is a common practice used across citrus packing in the industry.
It also said it is working with growers to develop a vegan-friendly alternative, although customers have criticised the supermarket for being too slow to act.
Tesco shoppers following a plant-based diet can buy organic citrus fruits to avoid using products which are coated in shellac.
