Asda’s summer ticket giveaway: How supermarkets are ensuring rewards schemes stand out
Asda Rewards has teamed up with Live Nation to give away 10,000 tickets to a host of UK music events this summer.
App users will have the chance to enter a ballot to win tickets to a wide range of live music experiences.
It is the latest rewards initiative from the supermarket, which launched its “pounds, not points” membership scheme in 2022. Asda Rewards enables shoppers to build a “cashpot” that can then be spent on in-store and online purchases.
Shoppers can also add to their cashpot by completing missions, such as buying five fruit and veg items to unlock their ‘5-a-day badge’.
The app-only scheme is set to be “revitalised” under the stewardship of new vice president of customer data and loyalty Chris Chalmers.
Each of the traditional “Big 4” supermarkets, as well as Lidl, Marks & Spencer and Fortnum & Mason, have loyalty programmes. Increasingly, these grocers are having to work to ensure their membership schemes are a true driver of loyalty.
Lidl: gamification
Similar to Asda, discount grocer Lidl offers a digital-only rewards scheme. The app previously combined personalised coupons, spend milestones and scratchcards.
In May, a new rewards feature for Lidl Plus app users was announced following customer feedback. The new system allows shoppers to collect points through the Lidl Plus app and redeem them in an in-app marketplace.

Morrisons: third-party points
Morrisons not only allows consumers to collect points in its store network or online, but also when they purchase on Amazon.co.uk.
It has worked to expand loyalty into everyday spending by allowing More Card members to earn rewards through hundreds of external brands, including online retailers, travel companies and take-away services.
Sainsbury’s: Nectar 360 network
Nectar has evolved into more of a rewards ecosystem rather than a supermarket card.
Customers can earn and spend points with retailers and services including Argos, Esso and travel partners. It recently gained the ability to earn points on certain grocery deliveries through Deliveroo and Uber.
Tesco: 30 years of Clubcard
Introduced in 1995, Tesco’s membership offering has been championed as the UK’s favourite as it “gets the basics right” for shoppers.
Tesco has ensured its loyalty cards are almost essential for accessing many promotional prices. Clubcard Prices often deliver the majority of a shopper’s savings, while points and partner rewards sit on top. Tesco also uses its data to personalise coupons and offers.
