Asda workers suspend bank holiday strike
Asda workers at the supermarket giant’s Brighton store have called off their second round of strike activity after receiving a last-minute offer from the grocer.
The GMB Union say workers at Asda’s Brighton Hollingbury superstore were set to strike for 24 hours tomorrow, (23 August), over an ongoing dispute for “better working conditions” and more hours for employees.
The union claims over 100 members were to walk out from 10pm Friday 23 August to 10pm Saturday 24 August after failing to reach an agreement between GMB and Asda, following workers first striking at the store in May.

However, now GMB said it received a “last-minute” offer from the grocery retailer, which is due to be discussed next week.
GMB Union senior organiser Lib Whitfield said: “After the last talks failed, our members had no option but to continue their action again this weekend, however a last-minute offer has been made and we have agreed to suspend our strike action.
“GMB representatives will now meet with Asda managers to confirm the details of the proposal and then consult our members on this offer. It is ultimately our members who will decide if the offer is sufficient to end the dispute and the strike mandate remains live and active if they are not satisfied.”
Earlier this week, it emerged workers at Asda’s Skelton superstore in York are undergoing a formal strike ballot, which is due to close on 9 September.
Asda has been contacted for comment.
