The supermarkets that have slashed prices this month

A wide array of supermarkets have slashed their prices to provide respite to shoppers who budgets have been squeezed.

Grocery Gazette rounds up the latest tranche of price cuts and where they have been made.

Asda has invested £23m to cut the prices of 425 branded and own-label products.

From 24 August, prices will be lowered by an average of 11% on items such as nappies, infant follow-on milk, bread, cheese, cereals, pasta, fish fingers, sausages and chicken breasts.

This also follows a £13m investment last month to cut prices on more than 200 own-label products by an average of 9%.

Sainsbury’s has expanded its Aldi Price Match campaign with its ‘biggest ever’ value offering, passing on price cuts to customers as inflation begins to slow.

The supermarket chain has added over 40 new items to the price match, which now includes 400 products in total.

New additions include a range of Sainsbury’s soups, burger buns and bread, as well as sweet treats like Bramley Apple Pies.

Nectar Prices – which the supermarket claims has saved customers over £244m since it launched in April – is also available on frozen foods for the first time.

Ocado is cutting the price of a further 200 branded and own-label items as part of its Big Price Drop.

The ‘back to school’ initiative looks to help parents save as the summer holidays come to an end, with product prices reduced by an average of 8%.

Heinz Beans have been reduced by 25p to £3.75, Walkers Ready Salted Crisps and Ocado own-range easy peelers are both down by 10p, and Copella Apple Juice has seen a 29% reduction from £2.80 to £2.

Iceland has slashed the price of 200 products as part of a summer savings initiative.

Customers can save up to £3.75 across products such as Richmond Sausages, Greggs cheese and onion bakes, Lurpak, Persil 3-in1 washing capsules and Starbucks Multiserve caffe latte or caramel macchiato.

The Holiday Heroes scheme comes as the frozen food retailer found that 54% of parents will reduce their expenses over the summer to put food on the table.

Over a third (37%) admitted they will look for more deals when shopping and over a quarter will limit spending on themselves to manage costs.

Aldi

Aldi store

Aldi has cut the price of more than 30 household products across its range of grocery staples.

The move from the German discounter means that shoppers will now pay even less for fresh produce including apples, oranges and peaches.

Essentials including butter, spread, canned food, personal hygiene products and pet treats are also included in the latest price drop, which has seen items fall by an average of around 7%.

The move is the latest of more than 130 prices that Aldi has cut in the past two months across its entire range, which also includes expanding its Super 6 fruit and veg promotional range to Super 7.

The German discounter has also cut the price of its fruit and vegetable ranges, including  avocados, red peppers, easy peelers, baking potatoes and sweetcorn, where shoppers will see prices cut by up to 36%.
