Sainsbury’s removes 140 tonnes of plastic from whole chicken range

Sainsbury’s has removed single-use plastic trays from its whole chicken packaging to save 140 tonnes of plastic annually.

The change, which affects its ‘by Sainsbury’s’ whole chicken range, will see the products sold trayless and using a minimum of 50% less plastic.

The updated products look to help customers reduce the amount of single-use plastic disposed of at home, however film packaging will still able to be recycled at one of the Big 4 grocer’s front-of-store flexible plastics recycling points.

The move will affect five products, including all ‘by Sainsbury’s whole chickens ranging from extra small to extra-large, which are available in all stores and online.

This comes as part of a string of plastic reductions to help meet the supermarket giant’s commitment to halve its use of own-brand plastic packaging by 2025.

Last month, Sainsbury’s removed single-use plastic lids from its own-brand dip pots and last September, switched its plastic coffee pods to aluminium to save over 10 million pieces of plastic every year.

In 2022, Sainsbury’s also launched its own-brand one litre refillable handwash pouch made with 85% less plastic and replaced the plastic packaging on its five-pack Fairtrade bananas with a paper bag.
