Patriotic Tesco shoppers stocking up on British classics ahead of Queen’s Jubilee

Tesco expects sales to soar as demand for British classic food rises to the highest level in a decade ahead of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The Big 4 grocer predicts sales of party food such as Scotch eggs, scones, cream cakes, bunting, special celebratory hats and fizz to soar further.

It also predicts shoppers will buy 60,000 rolls of bunting – enough to wrap around Windsor castle 10 times, and 50,000 Union Jack plates.

“We know from the two recent Royal Weddings just how much Brits love a royal celebration and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee is set to spark a feel-good factor with plenty of street and house parties,” Tesco chilled food category planner Alice Gallop said.

“As a result of that, we are predicting the biggest concentrated demand for British classic food and drink for a decade with patriotic staples such as pork pies, Scotch eggs, Coronation chicken sandwich filler and ingredients for a classic cream tea likely to be at the top of many shopping lists.”

The news comes after a series of food and drink launches from retailers across the country.

Waitrose has partnered with Buckingham Palace Gin and Moët & Chandon to offer limited edition bottles to celebrate the Jubilee weekend.

Moreover, Discounter retailer Aldi brought back its famous Kevin the Carrot toy to help celebrate the Jubilee, with a selection of limited-edition celebratory royal characters based on the iconic carrot soft toy.
