Aldi is set to invest £17.5m in solar panels at a further 230 UK stores between 2027 and 2031, as the supermarket expands its use of renewable energy across its estate.

The discounter said each installation will be capable of meeting up to 30 per cent of an individual store’s annual electricity requirements, helping it generate more power on site and reduce its reliance on the national grid.

The investment builds on Aldi’s existing £8.4m programme to install solar panels at 100 stores during 2025 and 2026. More than 500 of its UK stores are expected to have solar panels by the end of 2026.

The latest plans will bring Aldi’s total investment in solar power to approximately £26m by 2031.

Jonathan Neale, managing director of national real estate at Aldi UK, said: “We have plenty of space on our store roofs, so it makes sense to use it.

“We want solar power to become a normal part of how we run our stores, and this investment will help us bring it to even more locations over the coming years.

“By generating more of our own electricity, we can reduce our reliance on the grid and make our stores more sustainable.”

The investment forms part of Aldi’s wider programme to upgrade its UK estate, including the introduction of energy-saving measures such as fridge doors and natural refrigerants to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.

The supermarket announced plans earlier this year to invest more than £300m in upgrading and extending existing stores in 2026.

Aldi’s solar rollout comes as grocery retailers continue to explore ways to reduce the environmental impact and running costs of their store estates, with energy-intensive refrigeration and lighting among the areas where efficiency improvements can make a difference.
