Darren Blackhurst is returning to Asda as chief commercial officer for food, more than a decade after he last held the role.

Blackhurst previously served in the same position between 2006 and 2010, and is set to step back into the post at the end of July. He replaces Kris Comerford, who is stepping down after three years with the grocer.

A veteran in the retail sector, Blackhurst has held senior leadership roles at Matalan, Morrisons and, most recently, led the Coles Liquor division in Australia as managing director.

The move follows a short-lived stint at Morrisons in 2024, where Blackhurst was appointed interim chief customer and marketing officer. Though the role was expected to become permanent, he stepped down after just three months amid a wider leadership overhaul under CEO Rami Baitiéh.

Asda executive chairman Allan Leighton said: “Kris has been at Asda for three years and has been a key member of the executive team throughout that period.

“Kris’s style, approach and persona are unique – as well as being a great colleague, he is also an amazing human being.

“We wish him and his family well for the future and thank him for all he has done for the company.”

Until Blackhurst officially returns on 28 July, Ian McEvans will lead the commercial function on an interim basis.

Elsewhere, the Asda Express and Food Services arm, led by Chris Walker, will now report into David Lepley, with Jo Whitfield continuing to chair the business. The fuel division will report into Blackhurst once he is in post.
