Brussels sprouts to be 25% larger this year, says Tesco
Brussels sprouts are predicted to be 25% larger than last year as a result of positive growing conditions and new varieties, according to Tesco.
The supermarket’s supplier TH Clements reported an increase in the average size of its Brussels sprouts, with this year’s crop measuring 30mm in diameter compared to last year’s 24mm, The Independent reported.
The Lincolnshire-based grower’s commercial director John Moulding told the title: “This year we’ve pretty much had a reversal in growing conditions to 2023, with the right amounts of warmth and sunshine during the summer months after they were planted, good amounts of rain during the autumn and now colder weather in December.”

“Sprouts enjoy the breeze of the coast that gives frost protection,” he added.
TH Clements said it would be running up to 16 harvesters to meet its festive demand, as it expects to produce 192 million sprouts.
The supermarket anticipates it will sell around 1.5m kg of sprouts in the two weeks to Christmas, when approximately 25% of the annual sprout consumption happens in the UK.
It comes as Tesco is slashing the price of a traditional Christmas dinner, making it even more affordable than last year for members of its Clubcard loyalty scheme.
