Waitrose owner appoints former Tesco UK CEO as new chairman

Waitrose owner the John Lewis Partnership has appointed former Tesco UK chief executive Jason Tarry as its seventh chairman.

Tarry, who has 33 years’ experience at Tesco and held the role of UK and Ireland CEO for the past six years, is expected to take up the position in September and will succeed current chair Sharon White..

During his time at Tesco, Tarry worked across areas including grocery, general merchandise and fashion in senior commercial, operational and general management positions.

During this period, he delivered a market-leading grocery performance in the UK and led the expansion of F&F Clothing across Europe as group CEO.

John Lewis Partnership deputy chairman and chair of the nomination committee Rita Clifton said: “As the Partnership moves into the next phase of its modernisation focused on our core retail business as well future growth, we are confident that Jason will provide the kind of inspirational leadership, a proven track record in multi-channel, multi-category retail success and a strong identification with Partnership values that we are seeking in this role.

“Jason has impressed everyone throughout the interview process with his warmth, his belief in the Partnership’s ideals and democratic principles and his appreciation for our unique and special brands.”

John Lewis Partnership, which owns both Waitrose and John Lewis, added that Tarry “is very supportive” of its strategy and looks forward to working with group CEO Nish Kankiwala.

Tarry explained: “The Partnership is unique and I’ve long been an admirer of the employee-ownership model, its values and Partner-led customer service.

“This starts with a sharp focus on being brilliant retailers for customers and investing in growth. I’m looking forward to working with the board, Nish and the executive team to deliver its clear strategy.”

White first announced that she would not be seeking a second term as chair of John Lewis Partnership in October 2023, making her the shortest-serving chair in the company’s history.

It came following a major blow for White last May as she narrowly won a vote of confidence from staff.

The council, made up 61 partners, said it did not have confidence in the Partnership’s performance under White’s leadership but backed her future strategy.

Speaking of Tarry’s appointment, White added: “I’m delighted to be handing over to Jason, who has a combination of fantastic retail experience with leadership through transformation.

“From my many conversations with Jason, he has demonstrated a clear appreciation for the Partnership model and champions it. I look forward to welcoming him to the Partnership in September and carrying out a smooth handover.”
