Greggs is set to launch standalone cafés in Sainsbury’s stores as it looks to expand its existing retail partnerships.
Greggs property director, Tony Rowson, told The Grocer it plans to open up to “half a dozen” sites across a combination of petrol station garages and in-store “coffee-style operations.”
The cafés will be operated by Greggs and follow on from the high street bakers first partnership with Sainsbury’s earlier this year, when it opened a concession at one of the supermarkets garages in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire.

This also looks to build on its current partnerships with other leading supermarkets.
In May, two new Greggs cafés opened in Tesco’s Leicester Hamilton and Romford stores, taking the total to seven, while Asda also operates cafés at its Boldon, Eastlands Manchester, Wigan and Huyton sites.
Last year, Greggs opened a record 186 new shops and is targeting a further 150 sites in 2023.
As part of this, it looks to expand in key transport hubs including Liverpool Street Station and Birmingham and Liverpool airports, and last week Greggs unveiled its first London airport shop at Gatwick’s South Terminal.
