Deliveroo rolls out multi-store grocery ordering in major app update
Deliveroo is rolling out two new app features designed to recreate the convenience of a high street shopping trip.
The on-demand delivery platform has launched a new “Bundles” feature, allowing customers to shop from up to three grocery or retail stores in one order without paying an extra delivery fee.
The feature is being tested with customers across the UK and Ireland who use Deliveroo for grocery shopping.
Deliveroo said the update is an industry first in the UK, claiming no other delivery platform currently offers the ability to order from three stores in one basket.
The new features are reportedly designed to help supermarkets, convenience stores and local retailers increase order volumes by removing a common barrier for shoppers who cannot find everything they need from a single store.
Deliveroo said limited selection at one store was ranked as one of the top barriers to grocery and retail purchases on its platform, with customers sometimes abandoning orders because of out-of-stock items, dietary requirements or broader shopping needs.
The company said the new multi-store ordering function would create a more flexible experience, allowing shoppers to combine purchases from local supermarkets, butchers, bakeries, pharmacies, florists and other retailers in one order.
Deliveroo vice president of consumer and new verticals Suzy McClintock said: “We want to emulate a trip to the shops on your local high street through the ability to order from multiple stores in a single order.
“Whether that be your local supermarket, butchers or bakers, through to your pharmacy, or florist, grocery customers can fulfil different needs in a single order, for no extra delivery cost.”
Deliveroo is also expanding its “post-order top up” functionality.
The feature previously gave customers a ten-minute window after checkout to add items from a nearby retailer to a restaurant order, such as wine or dessert from a supermarket.
The platform is now extending the same capability to restaurants, meaning customers can add items from a nearby restaurant after placing an order from a restaurant, supermarket or retailer.
Deliveroo said the feature would be useful for customers wanting to order from two separate restaurants, or combine a meal with grocery items.
The company said both Bundles and Top-Up are currently in pilot phase and may be adapted over time depending on customer response.
