Tesco has officially opened its 2,000th Express store in the Lion Yard shopping centre in Cambridge, creating 20 new jobs.
It marks a significant milestone for the UK’s largest retailer’s convenience store network, after the first Tesco Express store format was launched in 1994 with the ambition of being the UK’s most convenient retailer.
To celebrate this milestone, Tesco is making a special award from its community grants programme of £2,000 to local charities, and will donate 2,000 meals to local schools.
According to the retailer, the Tesco Express format is designed to bring value to more customers in more locations and has now expanded it so that 77% of the UK population now live within 10 minutes of an Express store.

Meanwhile, the retailer continues to provide more ways to help customers shop more easily – from its rapid delivery service, Whoosh, to expanding its Click & Collect service.
“This is an exciting milestone for the business as we continue to expand our store network to give us unrivalled proximity to customers looking for an easy and convenient shopping experience,” managing director of Tesco Convenience, Kevin Tindall said.
He added: “Our colleagues in Express do a brilliant job serving their local communities and our growing Express network makes it even easier for customers to find great value in more places.”
It comes as Tesco is expanding it’s existing meal deal offering by introducing a new ‘premium meal deal’ for £5.
Furthermore, online retailer Ocado is set to launch its new Price Promise which looks to compare prices against over 10,000 like-for-like products at Tesco.
