Tesco manufacturer Bakkavor receives praise for cage-free eggs pledge

Bakkavor Group has been praised by non-profit organisation, Lever Foundation for its ongoing commitment to sourcing cage-free eggs globally.

The fresh prepared food manufacturer which supplies leading supermarkets including Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Waitrose and M&S has pledged to only sell cage-free eggs from 2025 onwards.

Last week, Bakkavor released its updated Environmentally Sustainable Sourcing Policy which confirmed, “As a Group, we are committed to working towards 100% cage-free eggs by 2027, and in the UK, our largest market, we are working with our UK customers towards 100% cage-free eggs by 2025.”

The company which currently operates 23 factories across the UK, with a further five in the Unites States and nine in China will be implementing this policy globally.

Lever Foundation’s Kirsty Tuxford said: “We applaud Bakkavor’s new global cage-free egg policy, which will spare tens if not hundreds of thousands of laying hens in China, the US and the UK each year from intensive cage confinement while also boosting food safety for customers.”

Bakkavor is the most recent food company to join a chain of manufacturers such as Unilever, Danone, Nestle, Kraft, Mondelez and retailers including Tesco and Aldi in sourcing only cage-free eggs across their global supply chains.

This news comes as earlier this month, Morrisons became the first supermarket to launch its own range of carbon neutral eggs as part of its commitment to be directly supplied by ‘zero emission’ British farms by 2030, five years ahead of the rest of the supermarket industry.
