Aldi scraps single-use plastic from own-brand wipes

Aldi is set to remove single-use plastic from all its own-brand wipes by the summer in a bid to reduce plastic waste.

The discount retailer will switch all wipes across its Mamia baby, Lacura beauty and household range to 100% plant-based fibres, making them all biodegradable.

The supermarket estimates the move will prevent the equivalent of 7,000 tonnes of single-use plastic from going to landfill each year.

Aldi has pledged to halve the volume of plastic packaging it uses by 2025, which will see it remove 74,000 tonnes of plastic from circulation.

In addition, the store is also on track to ensure all its own-label product packaging is recyclable, reusable or compostable by the end of 2022. Branded products will hit the same targets by 2025.

“Moving to biodegradable wipes is another step forward in our commitment to reduce plastic across our ranges,” said Aldi plastics and packaging director Richard Gorman.

“It’s becoming increasingly important to our customers that their everyday products are environmentally friendly, and we’re pleased that this move will help them on their journey.”

The news comes after Big 4 grocer, Tesco, became the first retailer in the UK to stop selling baby wipes that contain plastic as part of the supermarket’s drive to cut down on plastic consumption.
