Tayto employees receive ‘inflation-busting’ pay rise

Employees at crisps and snacks manufacturer, Tayto Group, have been awarded an an “inflation-busting” pay rise.

According to trade union, GMB, workers at Tayto have been awarded a pay rise in a bid to support themselves and their families amidst soaring inflation rates.

“GMB has been organising and campaigning in our workplace and we’re over the moon to have delivered this well-deserved pay rise for our members,” Tayto GMB rep Ted Staples said.

GMB regional organiser Graig Thomson added: “Our members have worked above and beyond during this pandemic and employers across the UK must provide them with an appropriate reward.”

“The reward should be a significant pay increase because anything less would be equivalent to a pay cut.

“Employers should learn from crisp manufacture Tayto, who have not only provided their staff with a generous pay increase but also paid it two months earlier than what is standard practice.”

The news comes after Asda “forced” its 150,000 retail workers into accepting pay well below the industry average.

GMB national officer Nadien Houghton commented: “Most other supermarkets pay more than £10 an hour – Asda workers are looking at just £9.66 from April.”

People took to social media to express their disappointment with the supermarket’s decision.

One user said “When inflation and cost of living rise more than your wages it’s a pay cut. Not pay rise. @asda placing all their ‘key workers’ into the lowest-paid retail job. @GMB_union”
