Waitrose reduces plastic packaging on Easter eggs

Waitrose has announced it will halve the use of single-use plastic on own-brand Easter eggs and confectionery.

The products will contain 44 per cent less plastic and 18 per cent less card, with the majority of the egg’s packaging made from recycled materials.

The supermarket revealed its Squiggle Eggs and Milk Chocolate Hen with Speckled Eggs will be made from 80 per cent recycled content.

Waitrose added that 99.7 per cent of its Easter range packaging is now widely available.

Last month, the grocer topped Greenpeace’s annual league table of UK supermarkets for reducing plastic use.

Waitrose has pledged to make all of its packaging widely recycled, reusable or home compostable by 2023. It has also initiated reducing single-use plastic from its seasonal range of mugs, plates, cups and decorations.

“For many years, Easter eggs have been wrapped in foil, protected in plastic and covered in cardboard, to many, this seems excessive and is an area where we know we can make a real difference,” Waitrose packaging development manager Christina Capellaro said.
