Aldi has announced a commitment to secure a minimum of 50 per cent of its domestic produce through multi-year deals from UK farmers by 2027.

The discount retailer is increasing the number of long-term agreements it has with British farmers and horticulture suppliers as part of its push to back UK growers.

The agreement, which includes any deal of two years or more, will be available to both large- and small-scale farmers who show a strong performance within availability, quality and value.

The business stated that 75 per cent of its sales come from products which are bought from UK-based suppliers.

This initiative comes as British farmers continue to deal with some of the most difficult weather conditions in decades.

According to Aldi, last year’s high temperatures and drought cost the sector millions due to lost production and were followed by one of the wettest winters on record.

Julie Ashfield, chief commercial officer at Aldi UK, said: “British growers are at the very heart of our business and are essential to the delivery of great-quality fresh produce to our customers every single day.

“Extending our long-term agreements to more supplier partners is about strengthening those partnerships and providing greater certainty for our suppliers, giving them the confidence to invest in more efficient and sustainable farming methods.”

In 2024, the discount retailer invested over £30m in dairy farmers for three and a half years through a partnership with the UK’s biggest dairy cooperative, Arla.
