Tesco holds the biggest market share in the UK, with retail sales increasing by 0.7% to a total of 28.3% of the overall market share.

Sainsbury’s holds the second largest market share, with sales going up by 5.2% and reached an overall market share of 15.3%. Retailers Iceland, Aldi and Waitrose saw their sales increase by 4.5%, 4.3% and 3.7% respectively.

Morrisons experienced a slight sales growth of 1.7% while Co-op and Asda saw their sales decline by 2.3% and 3.2% respectively.

Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Worldpanel, comments: “Households are juggling a lot of different things when choosing what and where to buy their groceries.

“Inevitably, cost will be up towards the top of the list as price rises accelerate. Spending on offers has hit its highest level since April at 29.4%, as consumers hunt for deals to ease the burden on their wallets. Promotions often jump in the run-up to the festive season, so it’s likely the trend will continue as we get closer to December.”

The research also found shoppers are becoming increasingly eco-conscious, with 9% willing to pay more for sustainable products, while 40% are more concerned about the effect of microplastics on their health.
