Southern Co-op appoints Matt Turner as head of franchise
Southern Co-op has appointed Matt Turner as the new head of franchise after the retirement of Mike Fitton.
Fitton joined the retailer in 2012 and oversaw the franchise operations, which included store expansions and company growth.
Moving forward, Turner will oversee the retailer’s franchise strategy and support after previously serving as the head of funeral services.
Turner said: “I’m really excited to step into the Head of Franchise role at a time when collaboration and support for our franchise partners has never been more important.
“Having worked closely with colleagues and partners across the business, I’ve seen first-hand the strength of our franchise model and the opportunities we have to build on it.

“The role brings fresh challenges – from supporting partners through a changing economic landscape to strengthening standards and innovation – but also real opportunities to help our franchisees grow sustainably and confidently.”
This appointment comes after the members of Southern Co-op voted in favour of a major merger with Co-op, creating one of the biggest UK cooperative societies.
The transaction and transfer of businesses is expected to be completed in Q3 2026 subject to regulatory approval.
Last month, the retailer’s leadership urged members to vote for the proposed merger to keep the business operational.
