IKEA and Chupa Chups team up after surreal April Fools’ joke becomes reality
IKEA is set to give away a limited-edition meatball-inspired lollipop in stores this June, after turning an April Fools’ joke into a real collaboration with confectionery brand Chupa Chups.
The sweet was teased by Ingka Group, IKEA’s largest retail operator, on 1 April as a playful nod to the retailer’s famous Swedish meatballs. Following strong consumer interest, the company has now confirmed the product will launch in hundreds of IKEA stores worldwide as part of a short-term in-store giveaway.
Around one million of the lollipops will be produced and distributed globally, although they will not be sold. Instead, shoppers will be able to try them for free during selected tasting events in participating stores throughout June.
IKEA said the lollipop had been developed by Chupa Chups to capture the flavour cues and wider appeal of its Swedish meatballs and lingonberry pairing, reworked into a novelty confectionery format.
Javier Quiñones, commercial manager at Ingka Group, said the business had decided to take the joke further after the response to the original April Fools’ announcement.
He said: “On 1 April, we invited people to imagine a meatball lollipop. And we couldn’t help but take it one step further.”
The retailer said the activation ties into its wider focus on cooking and eating, as it looks to reinforce food’s role in creating enjoyable everyday moments for customers.
It also pointed to consumer research suggesting appetite remains strong for indulgent treats and nostalgic food experiences, with shoppers continuing to seek out products that feel both playful and familiar.
Chupa Chups said the partnership offered a chance to reinterpret one of IKEA’s best-known food staples in a way designed to surprise consumers.
Martin Hofling, global marketing manager at Chupa Chups, said the brand was immediately interested when approached about the idea.
He said the limited-edition launch was intended as a “playful tribute” to a flavour strongly associated with IKEA, reimagined through the Chupa Chups brand.
The lollipops will not be available in Sweden, Japan, India, Serbia, Croatia, Romania or Slovenia. Customers are being advised to check with their local IKEA store and social media channels for details of tasting events.
