Radnor Hills founder William Watkins becomes High Sheriff of Powys, 70 years after grandfather held role
William Watkins, founder of Welsh soft drinks producer Radnor Hills, has been appointed High Sheriff of Powys, following in the footsteps of his grandfather seven decades after he held a similar position.
Watkins was sworn in at a ceremony held at the Judge’s Lodging in Presteigne on 10 April, beginning a one-year term in one of the UK’s oldest secular offices. His grandfather, Jack Watkins MBE, served as High Sheriff of Radnorshire in 1956.
Speaking after the ceremony, Watkins said taking on the role carried personal significance because of his family history.
He said it was “a great honour and responsibility” and added that he had been particularly moved by the chance to continue a family legacy.
The role of High Sheriff dates back more than 1,000 years and today centres on supporting the judiciary, emergency services and voluntary organisations.
Watkins said he wants to use the post to spotlight the work taking place across Powys, particularly in rural communities, and to draw attention to the growing pressures facing the farming sector in Wales.
He has chosen the DPJ Foundation, which supports people in agriculture experiencing mental health challenges, as his nominated charity during his year in office.
Watkins, whose family has farmed in Powys for generations, said the charity’s work is especially important at a time when many farmers are dealing with rising costs, uncertainty around agricultural support, and the isolation that can come with rural life.
His appointment comes as Radnor Hills continues to grow its presence in the UK drinks market. The independently owned manufacturer, which recently marked its 35th anniversary, employs around 280 people and produces more than 400 million drinks a year.
Based in Knighton, Powys, with a second site in Pen-y-Cae, the business is known for its soft drinks and spring water products, using Welsh spring water sourced close to its production facilities.
