Sainsbury’s teams up with Comic Relief to donate one million meals
Supermarket Sainsbury’s is partnering with charity Comic Relief to help families facing with food poverty in the UK over the summer.
As part of its fundraising initiative, every penny of Sainsbury’s private label pasta purchased between 9 July and 1 August will be donated to Comic Relief with a goal of providing one million meals to families.
According to the figures from a survey conducted by Sainsbury’s, a projected 7.3 million people across the UK will deal with food poverty during the summer break.
Ruth Cranston, Director of Sustainability at Sainsbury’s said: “Summer is a time where food shapes joyful memories for many people across the UK, but with food poverty remaining one of the most urgent challenges of our time, the reality for millions of families this summer will be very different.”
“We’re supporting incredible organisations through our Nourish the Nation program to alleviate food poverty and help everyone access quality, nutritious food.”

She added: “This includes our support for holiday clubs over the summer as well as funding for 15 new school-based food clubs around the UK that will provide year-round support to families facing food poverty.”
Additionally, Sainsbury’s is committed to providing funds for families in the UK by giving to over 100,000 holiday club places across the country with a donation of £1.8m.
Samir Patel, chief executive of Comic Relief said the number of children at risk of going hungry over the summer holidays is “deeply concerning”.
“Many parents will find it incredibly difficult, or even impossible, to find the extra money to provide more food at home with household finances already stretched to breaking point.”
Last month discounter Aldi also launched a charity scheme to help families over summer school holidays with a new voucher scheme.
