Sainsbury’s hits highest grocery market share in a decade
Sainsbury’s has posted a strong start to the financial year in its first quarter, reporting its highest market share in a decade, alongside a boost in customer satisfaction.
For the 16 weeks to 21 June 2025, the supermarket chain posted that total retail sales were up 4.9%, and 5% for grocery, confirming a third consecutive year of market share gains, with food volumes growing ahead of competitors.
Chief executive Simon Roberts said the results showed that Sainsbury’s is “delivering its strongest ever customer offer,” and now holds its highest share of the UK grocery market in almost a decade.
The supermarket attributed its success to sales being driven by price investments and the expansion of its Aldi Price Match scheme, now covering 800 everyday products.
Meanwhile, Taste the Difference sales also surged by 20%, helped by new deli and picnic ranges designed for summer gatherings.”

“We know how important it is that we provide consistently great value and we have built further on our strong competitive position, improving our prices against all key competitors year-on-year,” Roberts said.
“We’re now offering even more opportunities for customers to save on the items they buy most often through the biggest Aldi Price Match commitment in the market, covering around 800 everyday essentials. As a result, our Value for Money customer satisfaction scores are the highest they have ever been.”
Elsewhere, convenience store sales were up 6%, supported by higher availability and refreshed food-to-go ranges, while online grocery also saw 6% growth, with more customers using the service and adding more items to their baskets.
Looking ahead, Sainsbury’s reaffirmed its full-year outlook, expecting around £1bn in underlying retail operating profit and more than £500m in retail free cash flow. It added that its profit delivery will be weighted more heavily towards the second half of the year, and its still continues to target £1bn in cost savings by March 2027.
It also reaffirmed that shoppers can expect a new Nectar360 retail media platform, “Pollen”, to launch later this year, allowing partner brands to run personalised campaigns across the group.
Simon Roberts concluded: “We have great momentum, growing faster than the market for three consecutive years and we are well set to deliver another strong performance over the summer.”
