Lidl and Ocado thrive as Asda’s market share slumps
Lidl and Ocado have seen strong growth in 12 weeks to 26 January as Asda once again found itself outpaced by its rivals, according to new data from analyst Kantar.
Figures from Kantar’s Total Till Roll showed Lidl sales rose by 7.4% over the period, marking three years of continual growth for the discounter as its market share hit 7.2%.
Fellow discounter Aldi also fared well, accelerating for the third consecutive month with sales up 4.2% and its market share increasing to 10.2%.
Yet it was Ocado that cinched the title of fastest growing grocer for the ninth consecutive month. The online supermarket grew by 11.3%, leaving it holding 1.9% of the market.

Other winners included M&S, which experienced a strong 12 week period of growth with grocery sales up by 10.5%, and the UK’s largest retailer Tesco, which gained the largest share of 28.5% – 0.7% higher than this time last year.
However, Asda again experienced a fall, down 5.2% compared to the same period last year, with sales of £4.63bn compared to £4.882bn in 2024. It now holds 12.6% of the market, in contrast to its previous 13.6%.
The data follows the grocer making drastic strategic changes in the past month, including the scrapping of its Aldi and Lidl price match, and the return of its infamous Rollback campaign.
Elsewhere, Kantar’s data showed that convenience retailer Co-op bounced back into growth, with sales increasing by 0.8%, leaving it with a 5.2% share of the market.
Kantar head of retail and consumer insight Fraser McKevitt said: “Supermarkets were dishing out the discounts this New Year, and consumers responded. Spending on promotions rose year-on-year by £274 million, accounting for 27.2% of sales – the highest level in January since 2021.
“People also turned to non-branded products to help keep costs down, with own label as a proportion of sales hitting a record high of 52.3% in January. Spending on supermarkets’ own lines was up 5.4%, helped by consumers buying premium own label products in the couple of days leading up to New Year’s Eve.”
