Aldi is set to create 1,600 new store roles this year as it pushes ahead with its 2025 expansion plans, despite job cuts at rival supermarkets over the past few weeks.

The discount grocer, which currently has more than 1,050 stores, has plans to open more this year as part its £650m investment in Britain.

Its next stores to open in the UK include branches in March in Cambridgeshire, Moston in Greater Manchester, and Lytham in Lancashire, over the coming weeks.

The roles available, which include store managers, assistant store managers, deputy store managers, store assistants and cleaners, come despite others supermarkets having recently unveiled a raft of redundancies.

Last month, Morrisons unveiled plans to cut over 200 jobs in its retail people team, while Sainsbury’s is slashing over 3,000 jobs amid what chief executive Simon Roberts has described as a “particularly challenging cost environment”.

Asda has axed 13 regional managers as part of a senior shake-up and last week Tesco became the latest supermarket to announce cuts, with 400 store and head office jobs at risk. UK CEO Matthew Barnes said the retailer is seeking to “simplify” the business due to a “more competitive than ever” grocery sector.

Despite this, Aldi is set to continue with its expansion plans this year. Aldi UK HR director Kelly Stokes said: “Our store colleagues are the best in the business and, as we continue to expand our store network and provide more customers with access to Aldi’s high-quality, affordable products, we’re going to need to grow those store teams with even more amazing people.

“We are committed to creating rewarding careers and offering market-leading pay for all our store colleagues. This year promises to be an exciting year as we bring even more Aldi stores to local communities across Britain.”

Frozen food retailer Iceland has also invited retail staff and managers to join its team following the industry-wide job cuts, sharing that more than 600 jobs are available across its operations nationwide.

Just a shame they’re making 350 buying and finance workers redundant to outsource their jobs to India – whoops bet they didn’t mention that!
