Asda appoints former Tesco director as interim online boss
Asda has appointed former Tesco director Barney Burgess as its interim vice president of online until David Devany joins the business next year.
Burgess will lead the Asda.com, George.com and online operations teams with immediate effect, reporting to chief digital officer Matt Kelleher.
He brings over 25 years experience across retail, consumer and financial services sectors to the role, both in the UK and internationally.
Burgess spent five years running Tesco’s grocery home shopping business, during which time the supermarket launched its click-and-collect service for grocery orders int the UK.

He also brings consulting experience from McKinsey, where he advised online grocery businesses on their operational strategies.
Next year, Devaney will assume the role as Asda’s permanent vice president of ecommerce, joining from Iceland where he has spent the past five years as group chief marketing, customer and digital officer.
It comes as Morrisons hired former Iceland executive Andrew Staniland as its new group trading director, wooing him away from his move to Asda.
In July, it was understood Staniland was to replace Asda veteran and former commercial director Paul Gillow, amid a slew of senior departures, however it is unclear whether the move ever took place.
