Amazon senior vice president of worldwide grocery stores, ex- Tesco COO Tony Hoggett, will exit this week after nearly three years at the business.

In a LinkedIn post on 25 October, the grocery boss announced that it was time for “the next step” in his career.

During his time at the ecommerce giant, Hoggett supervised the closure of its non-food retail storefronts, before attempting to reboot its grocery arm.

In the US, he removed the Just Walk Out system from Amazon Fresh stores, replacing it with smart shopping carts. The feature allows for real-time receipts, which enables customers to monitor their spending as they shop, rather than at the end, as with the previous technology.

Hoggett said on LinkedIn: “My time at Amazon has been incredible, and I’m grateful to my colleagues for their support, guidance and friendship. I’m optimistic about the work Amazon is doing to improve the grocery shopping experience for customers, and have no doubt the teams will keep the momentum going in my absence. I’ll be cheering you all on.”

It comes as Amazon could be hit with higher taxes as Chancellor Rachel Reeves looks to raise business rates for online tech giants in the Budget this week.
