Halloween chocolate price rises this year could far outstrip grocery inflation, according to consumer group Which?.
The caution comes in the wake of the prices of chocolate in the UK already increasing by 11% in the past year to the end of August, above the average grocery inflation of 2.7% in the same period.
The jump in price for shoppers is thought to be caused by both weather issues, such as a wetter-than-usual rainy season, and increased global demand for cocoa.
Which? has highlighted the most extreme examples of ‘chocflation’, including both brand and retailer own brand, with Sainsbury’s 100g milk chocolate almost doubling from 95p in August 2023, to £1.84 a year later.

Other examples include a Cadbury multipack of treat-sized bars sold at Sainsbury’s, rising from £2.50 to £3.72, while at Morrisons, a 360g Cadbury Milk Tray box increased from £4.01 to £5.74.
Which? retail editor Ele Clark said: “Our research shows that despite overall food and drink inflation continuing to fall, chocolate prices have risen dramatically in the last year.
“To ensure you get the best value for money on your Halloween chocolate, shop around and compare the price per gram across different pack sizes, retailers and brands.”
