Supermarkets get kick-off ready as Euro final set to boost sales
UK supermarkets have said the weekend Euro 2024 football final is set to boost sales as fan’s flood to stores for last minute products to enjoy the game.
Grocers Sainsbury’s, Asda and Tesco anticipate that items from beer, wine, snacks, pizza and BBQ food, to large screen TVs and England shirts will be bought last minute ahead of Sunday’s England versus Spain match.
Sainsbury’s has predicted that beer sales are to increase 200% year-on-year, with sales of sparkling wine and ready-to-drink cocktail cans already up 30%.
Asda also said that it has already sold over 20,000 large screen ultra-high-definition TVs during Euro 2024, with more expected to be shifted before the weekend’s game.

Meanwhile has Tesco forecasted that it will sell one million pizzas, 180,000 packs of burgers, 800,000 packs of sausages, four million packs of beer and cider, 1.2m cans of no- or low-alcohol and 2.5m bottles of wine.
Ahead of the match result, the supermarket giant also said it expects to sell 20,000 bottles of champagne from shoppers anticipating an England victory.
Tesco ordering manager Jason Binks told the Guardian it has launched a “major operation” to ensure its stores are well stocked this weekend.
“We have a well-rehearsed supply plan in place to make sure all our stores are stocked for the extra demand,” Binks added.
It comes as some of the UK’s leading supermarkets announced that they are to shut their doors earlier this Sunday, in order to allow staff time to watch Sunday’s 8pm kick-off.
Yesterday Lidl and Sainsbury’s announced they were adjusting their store hours, following suit of Tesco who said it was to close 1,800 Express stores earlier at 7:30pm, rather than the usual closing time of 10pm or 11pm.
