Sainsbury’s brings back 10p Freddos as it celebrates Cadbury anniversary

Sainsbury’s is hailing the return of the 10p Freddo as the supermarket giant celebrates the 200th anniversary of Cadbury.

Shoppers with Nectar cards will now be able to purchase the iconic Cadbury confectionery treat for 10p at Sainsbury’s superstores – down from its usual non-Nectar card retail price of 25p.

The grocer took to social media to broadcast the change, referencing the ‘Freddo Price Index’ – a humourous consumer price index that has been used to reference how the price of Freddo has increased with inflation.

The video states: “It’s been a long time since these [Freddo] were 10p. Too many years, too many trends, too many messages. But now, finally, Freddos are 10p again with Nectar Prices. We’re back.”

Sainsbury’s director of grocery Rachel Clark said: “We’re delighted to be celebrating such an iconic moment for Cadbury and its milestone of 200 years as a loved chocolate brand.

The campaign is set to run between 17 April to 7 May, and alongside the reduced Freddos, will offer customers discounts on grocery favourites, such as Cadbury Dairy Milk and Cadbury Milk Tray.

Sainsbury’s latest campaign follows in the wake of other grocery retailers restoring the price of the Freddo. In 2019, Tesco indulged fans by temporarily returning to 10p Freddos to mark the retailer’s 100th anniversary.

Freddo bars were first sold for 10p in the 90s, before the price began to increase in 2005. In recent years both Mondelez-owned Cadbury and retailers have faced criticism from fans who accused the chocolate goods of undergoing shrinkflation.
