Aldi has held its position as the UK’s cheapest supermarket amid shoppers turning to discounters as household budgets tighten.
Consumer group Which? has named the discount supermarket as the cheapest in the UK with a 72-item basket costing £129.24, over £40 less than at Waitrose
Which? retail editor Ele Clark said: “Our latest research has found Aldi held on to its position as the UK’s cheapest supermarket in January.
“With food prices continuing to put immense pressure on household budgets, it’s no surprise to see many people turning to the discounters, especially as shoppers could save 24 per cent by doing so.”

The news follows analyst GlobalData’s predicting that M&S is on course to overtake Waitrose’s market share as it wins back middle-class shoppers.
