Aldi has been named the cheapest supermarket of the year for 2023, marking the third consecutive year that the discounter has won the accolade.

According to Which?’s annual price comparison tracker of UK supermarkets, Aldi was crowned the cheapest supermarket eleven times in 2023 and was found to be the least expensive for the month of December.

The consumer watchdog found that the discount grocer was £20 cheaper than Waitrose which was named the most expensive supermarket, and £10 cheaper than both Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

Aldi UK managing director of buying Julie Ashfield said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be named the Cheapest Supermarket of the Year for a third year running.

“We are committed to providing shoppers with the best quality products at the lowest prices and it’s great to have that officially recognised by a highly respected consumer champion, such as Which?.

“As we head into 2024, our promise to our customers remains the same – they will always get the UK’s lowest prices at Aldi.”

This comes as Aldi had its strongest Christmas trading period to date as sales topped £1.5bn for the first time in the four weeks to 24 December, up 8% from the same period in 2022.
