Iceland distribution centre workers secure pay rise

Workers at Iceland’s cold food storage facilities run by GXO have secured a pay increase following a campaign of industrial action, says Unite Union.

The employees at the Swindon GXO site will now receive a 6% pay increase on basic pay and further rises in overtime, as well as unsocial pay – extra pay for work outside of normal working hours –  backdated to 1 March last year.

Other changes include an increase in incentives for those working in the freezer section of the warehouse, chiller section and ambient sections, while the union’s bargaining has also allowed for flexible working employees to receive higher pay rates.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “This is a great win for GXO’s workers and for Unite. It shows the power of the trade union movement and the strength of Unite’s bargaining. I congratulate all our members at GXO on the grit and determination in their fight for better pay.”

Unite regional officer Paddy Brennan added: “Our members stood together and have won a well-deserved pay award. Unite always stands up for its members and we continue to win improved pay offers across the country.”

The new pay rise follows Iceland owner boss Richard Walker announcing he was increasing the discount it offers its employees in a move aimed to ease the cost of living crisis.
