Asda has promoted property boss Chris Walker to managing director of its Express convenience store business.

Walker, previously vice president and group property director, will lead Asda Express’s development and financial performance, reported The Grocer.

He takes over from current vice president of convenience Andy Perry, who has been spearheading the conversion of former EG Group and Co-op sites to Asda Express stores.

The programme is due to finish by the end of March when Perry will then exit the company.

The retailer announced earlier this week it will be opening a record 110 Express stores this month as it aims to strengthen its network across the UK.

Alongside one organic launch, 109 of the new stores are converted former Co-op and EG Group sites following its partnership.

The new sites are mainly located across the south where the grocer has “traditionally been under-represented”.
