Capri-Sun rolls out ‘stronger than ever’ paper straws

Capri-Sun is updating its paper straws to be FSC-certified and “stronger than ever” as it looks to make its portfolio of drinks more sustainable.

The straws, which will roll our across its entire range in the first quarter of this year, have 36% more bending force resistance, can withstand 18% more compression force and will increase vertical compression resistance by 42%, Packaging Europe reported.

It comes as part of the drinks giant’s goal to transition its entire UK portfolio into fully recyclable packaging.

Capri-Sun UK senior marketing manager Anke von Hanstein said: “As part of our commitment to product development, we’re constantly looking for ways to improve the Capri-Sun experience and make our products more enjoyable.”

The brand initially rolled out paper straws across its pouch drinks in 2021, however the latest move looks to provide an improved version following feedback from consumers.

Other brands and retailers have made similar moves to switch to paper straws in the past, including Aldi which removed plastic straws from its own-label drink cartons in 2021 to help remove 70m plastic straws from circulation.

Last April, Innocent Drinks also launched a new range of 100% recyclable straws that are 50% stronger than the ones previously used across its kids’ smoothies and juice ranges.
