Morrisons relaunches ‘Giving Tree’ initiative to help fill food banks

Morrisons has relaunched its annual ‘Giving Tree’ initiative as it aims to fill the nation’s food banks this Christmas.

The reintroduced festive scheme follows its success last year, where it raised over £350,000 for local causes.

Customers will be able to pick up a bauble worth £1, £2 or £5 to donate to a local food bank or nominated community group.

It comes as Morrisons also launches a ‘Pick Up Packs’ initiative designed to boost local food banks with the groceries they need the most.

The new campaign will give shoppers 100 points when they purchase and donate a ‘Pick Up Pack’ in-store, which contains cupboard and household essentials specifically requested by local community groups.

The pre-packed bags cost between £1 and £5, and contain products such as such as cereal, pasta, sauces, tinned vegetable and toiletries, as well as festive items like selection boxes.

Shoppers will have a chance to pick up a pack and pay at the till, before donating to a dedicated in-store station. It will then be distributed to a local food bank.

Morrisons community manager Joseph Clark-Bland said: “Food banks are a lifeline for many people in the UK and demand can be especially high at Christmas. That’s why we wanted to make it easier for our customers to donate in whatever way they can, to help those in their local community get the items and support they need.”

Other Christmas charitable initiatives launched by the grocery retail include a continuation of its surplus food programmes, which sees unsold food donated to support local families, and its annual Christmas Appeal in support of The Trussell Trust. Last year, shoppers managed to raise over £134,000.
