Morrisons and Too Good To Go save one million surplus food bags from going to waste

Morrisons and Too Good To Go have saved one million Magic Bags of surplus food from going to waste in the UK.

The retailer became the first UK supermarket to partner with the world’s largest food saving platform, and has been redistributing surplus food since October 2019.

The initiative allows people to access food at cheaper prices while helping to prevent food from ending up in landfill, playing a major part in Morrisons commitment to halving food waste by 2030.

The milestone means that Too Good To Go users have together prevented a thousand tonnes of food from being thrown away.

In doing so, 2,500 tonnes of C02e emissions have also been saved from going to waste – the equivalent annual emissions of 294 UK citizens or almost 500 flights around the world.

This is made more significant by the fact that food waste is responsible for 10% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.

To save food from going to waste, consumers can simply download the free Too Good To Go app and search for their local Morrisons store with unsold produce.

They can then purchase a ‘Magic Bag’ – to collect at an allotted time – containing a variety of surplus grocery items worth at least £10, but sold for just £2.99 through the app.

“We’re thrilled to have reached this significant milestone,” corporate responsibility manager at Morrisons, Rebecca Cranshaw said.

Managing Director of Too Good To Go UK and Ireland, Sophie Trueman added: “At Too Good To Go we believe that saving food from going to waste is a real win-win-win.

“Businesses can recover the sunk cost of would-be wasted food, consumers can get good food for less, and with one simple action, we’re collectively doing something great for the planet by stopping that food from ending up in landfill.

“Our community of users love Morrisons’ Magic Bags and I can’t wait to see our longstanding partnership continue to flourish,” Trueman said.

The news comes as Morrisons is to cut 160 McColl’s head office roles as it continues to set out plans to integrate the convenience store chain into its grocery business.
