Aldi named cheapest supermarket as Waitrose remains most expensive
Aldi has retained its title as the cheapest supermarket this April, as Waitrose remains the priciest of the leading grocery retailers.
New data from consumer group Which? checked the prices of 67 popular grocery products at eight of the UK’s biggest supermarkets to determine that Aldi was again the cheapest grocer overall at an average basket cost of £112.90.
In second place came fellow discounter Lidl, which scored an average of £115.23, while Asda took third place with a basket costing an average of £126.98.

On the other side of the scale, Waitrose retained the label of the UK’s most expensive grocer with an average basket cost of £144.13, making it £31.23 or 28% more expensive than Aldi.

The latest figures follow supermarket bosses receiving a grilling by MPs on the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee over their role in fairness in the supply chain, shrinkflation and soaring profits.
Tesco commercial director for fresh food Dom Morrey admitted that the past 18 months had been “particularly challenging” with input prices having “spiked”, but he maintained the retailer had “quickly” attempted to resolve these.
“We’ve responded quickly and appropriately to address them [challenges] and pay the price that’s fair to our supplier partners when they’ve asked for it,” Morrey said.
