Aldi retains title as UK’s cheapest supermarket

News

Aldi has been renamed the cheapest supermarket for March, beating rival discounter Lidl by less than £2.

Consumer watchdog Which? found that the grocer had the lowest average basket total of just £121.06, for the price of 71 popular food items including a Hovis loaf, baked beans and carrots.

Rival Lidl was not far behind with a total of £122.95, while Asda and Tesco narrowly fought for third and fourth place with a basket total of £138.31 and £139.23 respectively – only a 92 pence difference.

Retaining the title of the most expensive grocer, Waitrose had an average basket total of £158.52.

Aldi UK managing director of buying Julie Ashfield told The Sun: “Our continued position as the UK’s Cheapest Supermarket in 2024 is one we’re very proud of.”

“At Aldi, we’ve pledged to cut more prices than ever before in 2024 and this is just part of our commitment to ensure we keep supporting customers.

“It’s great to consistently have this recognised by a highly respected consumer champion, such as Which?.”

Earlier in the year, all four of the full-line grocers had launched or were continuing with campaigns that saw them price match Aldi or Lidl, in a bid to win back shoppers.

In January, Asda became the first supermarket to price match both Aldi and Lidl on 287 everyday grocery products, while the following month, Morrisons also launched a price match campaign, with hundreds of weekly essentials offered at the same price or lower than the two discounters.
