Co-op reveals over 50% of Brits likely to have a cost-effective BBQ this summer

A report from the Co-op has revealed that over half of Brits (56%) are more likely to have a cost-effective barbecue at home this summer, rather than spending on more expensive meals in restaurants.

As the cost-of-living crisis continues to impact the UK, new research from the UK’s leading convenience retailer suggests that barbecues will surge in popularity as Brits look to save cash when they get together with friends and family.

Sales data from the report predicts that the Co-op will sell more than 22 million sausages, 7.5 million burgers and 6.2 million kebabs this summer.

The report also found that many barbecues that take place during the summer are unplanned and impromptu, with over a third of UK adults (35%) agreeing they would cook a last-minute barbecue for two.

The convenience retailer introduced new prices for Co-op members last month, and these members will now be able to access lower prices for a number BBQ essentials, including its popular 2 for £6 BBQ protein deal.

It comes as The Co-op partnered with Nisa, who’s own-brand products can now be found in a growing number of Nisa forecourts.

“It’s no surprise that barbecues remain a firm favourite when it’s time to get together with friends and family in the warmer months and this summer, they are potentially going to play an even more important role, as the cost-of-living squeezes household budgets and going out for meals happens less,” head of Co-op’s delicious food team, Nicole Tallant said.

“This year we’ve made sure that our British barbecue range is packed full of those iconic smokehouse flavours but also available at great value, including special member price offers and multibuy deals.”

Nicole added: “Co-op has a convenience store in every post code area of the UK, so we are right where our customers need us for all the BBQ essentials including food, drink, charcoal, plus UK weather dependent, sun cream or an umbrella.”

BBQ Expert, teacher and Live Fire Chef, Genevieve Taylor commented: “It’s ok to keep things simple with your barbecue, you don’t need to plan days ahead and prepare lots of different dishes.

“In fact, just a few last-minute easy options can make a memorable meal, as it’s the cooking and being outside that makes it feel special.”

Taylor added: “If there was ever a meal when people want to help it is a barbecue, it’s the most sociable way of cooking and eating.

“People are happy to let friends and family help with cooking and the cooking itself becomes an event just as much as the eating.”
