Mother’s Day 2023: Supermarkets focus on the classics – food, flowers and fizz

Supermarkets are focusing on the classics for this year’s Mother’s Day celebrations, with food, flowers and fizz taking centre stage in terms of promotions.

Looking to entice shoppers seeking the perfect gift to thank their mums, supermarkets have got this one covered, from breakfast in bed bundles to afternoon tea treats.

Here’s our pick of the best ways supermarkets are helping consumers mark the occasion this Sunday (19 March).

Morrisons

Morrisons is offering a range of money-friendly deals across food, flowers and fizz to treat mum this Mother’s Day, starting from as little as 39p. It has launched a range of limited-edition sweet and savoury treats especially for the big day, including The Best Breakfast Pack (£2.99), Love You Mum Bouquet (£6.00) and Sorso Prosecco (£6.49)

It has also cut the price of its popular afternoon tea for two to just £10 in its cafés ahead of Mother’s Day. Customers will receive a selection of sandwiches, cakes, fruit scones – complete with jam and clotted cream, and a pot of Yorkshire Tea.

“Treating mum shouldn’t cost the earth, that’s why we’re helping our customers by cutting the price of our popular afternoon tea for two just in time for Mother’s Day,” Morrisons Café buyer, Chris Strong said.

“Customers can spoil mum with a selection of tasty sandwiches, cakes and fruit scones for just £10 –  we look forward to welcoming families into our cafés to celebrate.”

Asda

Asda has included a wide range of Mother’s Day gift ideas in its promotions, such as flowers, meal ideas and self-care products.

The retailer is also giving mum’s a chance to get treated to breakfast in bed, as it launches a unique recipe book named ‘Messy Brekkies’, showing the reality of what the mums in our lives typically get served by their children.

“When it comes to Mother’s Day, nothing beats a heartfelt gesture like homemade breakfast in bed. The outcome isn’t always pretty, but the knowledge that it’s been made with love is better than any aesthetically pleasing plate,” an Asda spokesperson said.

“When it came to appointing our Mother’s Day recipe testers we wanted to hand creative control to those who know Mum best – the kids! We hope that in reading our Messy Brekkies E-book, everyone is inspired to get in the kitchen and give these Messy Brekkies a go.”

M&S

M&S is launching it’s afternoon tea time this Mother’s Day, alongside a range of flowers, plants and food.

Available now, the new service costs £12.50 per person, and includes a luxury sandwich selection, an all-butter scone with Cornish clotted cream and fresh strawberries, a mini chocolate cupcake topped with buttercream, French macaron and luxury Fairtrade tea.

“We are extremely excited to launch this five-star quality Afternoon Tea for £12.50, so Café fans across the nation can enjoy a delicious treat with loved ones whatever the occasion,” lead product developer for Hospitality at M&S Claire Hodgson said.

“As you would expect, every item is made using the very best ingredients from British chicken and British outdoor reared ham in our sandwiches to Cornish clotted cream in our scones. After all, this is not just any tea, this is an M&S Afternoon Tea,” she added.

Aldi

Aldi has a wide range of flowers and luxurious chocolates to pick from for Mother’s Day, alongside an array of brunch ingredients and affordable recipe ideas.
