Central Co-op helps support homeless people with £2 BillyChip scheme

Central Co-op is helping members of the public support homeless people by introducing the BillyChip scheme across its stores, allowing customers to provide food and drink to those in need.

The chips, which are made from a biodegradable ceramic polymer, cost £2 and can be given to someone sleeping rough as a way to allow them to access food and drink from a participating retailer.

Each BillyChip, which will be available at 250 branches of the convenience retailer from 27 March, can then be redeemed for a meal deal which features a snack, main and a drink.

“BillyChip is such a simple way to spread kindness to those who need it, and we are pleased we can make that possible in our stores,” Central Co-op social store manager, Hannah Gallimore said.

“We have seen the great work that BillyChip is already doing, and we’re always keen to support kind initiatives that make a real difference, especially as times get tougher for everyone.”

The £2 goes directly to BillyChip, which though its foundation, helps to support other relevant local charities in the society’s trading area.

Meg Abernethy-Hope, co-founder of BillyChip added: “The BillyChip is about going someone who is sleeping rough compassion, connection and choice.

“We are so proud to be partnering with Central Co-op, a business we know is built around supporting its community. This is an incredible partnership and we are beyond excited to see where it will take us in the future.”
