Tesco has opened its first GetGo store outside of London at Aston University in Birmingham offering customers a ‘faster way to shop’.
GetGo stores allow you to leave the store without scanning and paying for items at a till – similar to how Amazon Fresh stores work.
Using a combination of cameras and weight sensors, customers using the Tesco Clubcard app are able to choose their shopping and scan their items before heading to an exit.

However, shoppers won’t need a Clubcard to use the service, just a free account and payment details.
Additionally, for those not wanting to experience this new way to pay, the traditional methods of self-checkout and employee assistance will remain in the hybrid store.
Since the UK’s largest retailer launched its first GetGo store in central London in October 2021, the average shopper takes three minutes to complete their shop using the app.
“Tesco is leading the way in innovative technology to ensure convenience for our customers and improve customer experience,” store manager at Tesco GetGo Birmingham, Henna Husain said.
I am very excited and proud to be leading the first Tesco GetGo store outside of London with my team,” she added.
Tesco expanded its GetGo store trial across three more sites in November, introducing a new hybrid format to offer its customers a range of ways to shop.
The Aston University Express store is the first GetGo outside of the capital, joining the High Holborn Express, Chiswell Street Express and the Fulham Reach Express as Tesco’s fourth public GetGo store.
