Amazon Fresh to open new grocery store in Croydon

Amazon Fresh is opening a new grocery store in the London borough of Croydon, just days after closing one of its stores in Dalston, north east London.

Powered by the company’s Just Walk Out technology, the innovative grocery store allows customers to do their shopping without visiting a checkout.

The move comes after the closure of Amazon’s Fresh store in Dalston, which it permanently closed after just 18 months of operating.

The new Croydon location marks the first store opening since it launched the operation in Sevenoaks, Kent.

According to a report from The Telegraph, Amazon walked away from talks for dozens of potential sites for Amazon Fresh Stores after disappointing sales last year.

However, the global e-commerce company said it would look at reviving expansion plans in the next 12 to 18 months, the report claimed.

“Just like other retailers, we regularly review our business and from time to time adjust to ensure we are able to best serve our customers,” a spokesperson for the US retail giant told Retail Tech Innovation Hub.

They added: “We remain committed to Amazon Fresh UK physical stores and, in fact, are excited to confirm we will soon open two new Amazon Fresh stores in the Greater London area.”

The news comes as Amazon Fresh has revealed a surge in tinned food and ready meal purchases, as consumer budgets continue to be stretched amid the cost-of-living crisis.
