Vegan food prices rise by 18% at UK supermarkets

Vegan products have seen price hikes of 18% on average across UK supermarkets Tesco, Asda and Iceland, new research shows.

According to analysis by the Evening Standard of over 100 products at these grocery retailers, it found that plant-based pizza prices had risen by 42%, with vegan cheese up 28%.

Plant-based alternatives to meat, ice cream and milk have also risen between 19% and 25% over the past year.

The research also found that Big 4 grocer Asda’s own-brand soya milk had seen a 35% price rise to £1.15, with egg alternatives up 50% in price to £1.50.

“The differing ingredients and manufacturing process of products in our plant-based range are reflected in the price of these products. We are committed to ensuring a variety of products suit all budgets and needs,” an Asda spokesperson told the Evening Standard.

This comes as the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that food prices increased by 16.9% in the 12 months to December 2022, despite inflation dipping to 10.5%.

Early this year, many retailers launched their own plant-based ranges and stocked a larger number of vegan brands to appeal to consumers trying out the annual Veganuary challenge.

Earlier this month, Tesco added five new vegan products to its Plant Chef frozen food range and Cathedral City launched its plant-based cheese range in Sainsbury’s and Asda, alongside its current listing in Tesco.

The range available in block, grated and sliced formats will also be rolling out to Morrisons, Ocado and Amazon Fresh this January.
