Aldi to give pay rise to all UK warehouse workers from February

Aldi is increasing wages for around 7,000 warehouse workers across the UK from 1 February 2023.

Most distribution centre roles are warehouse selectors, and these colleagues will receive a new minimum rate of £13.18 an hour – up from £11.48 this time last year.

Following two pay increases for hourly-paid warehouse colleagues in 2022, this rise means colleagues will be paid up to 20% more than January 2022, taking Aldi’s investment in pay over the last 12 months to over £100m.

The move follows the German discounter’s recent pay review for store assistants which came into effect this month, and saw wages rise from £11.00 an hour nationally to £11.90.

On top of that, Aldi colleagues working within London saw their hourly rates increase from £12.45 rising to £12.75.

The new rates for both store colleagues and warehouse workers exceed the Living Wage Foundation’s recommended living wage of £10.90 an hour nationally.

The popular discounter is also the only UK supermarket to offer paid breaks, which is worth an additional £871 a year for the average store colleague.

In addition to pay increases, Aldi confirmed that there will be an introduction of up to two days paid leave per cycle of fertility treatment for colleagues.

“Just as we promise our customers that we will do all we can to support them, we are equally committed to supporting our amazing Aldi colleagues – as we remain the highest-paying supermarket in the UK,” Aldi UK & Ireland chief executive officer, Giles Hurley said.

He added: “This announcement recognises the hard work and contribution our colleagues make in serving communities across the country and it’s down to them that we are able to ensure our customers can access fresh affordable food, every single day.”

As the UK’s fourth-largest supermarket, Aldi has more than 990 stores and 11 regional distribution centres across Britain. Last week, Aldi was named as the cheapest supermarket in 2022 by consumer champion Which?.
