Walkers is set to invest £14 million in new sustainable packaging which will remove 250 tonnes of virgin plastic across its supply chain each year.
The change will see millions of the brands outer multipack packaging, which is currently made from plastic, replaced with a new cardboard design. Already trialed at Big 4 grocer Tesco, this will now be rolled out across all major UK supermarkets in the next few weeks.
This comes with the launch of its new stretch film made with nanotechnology which will be wrapped around pallets before distributed to retailers.
As well as resulting in a 40% year on year reduction in fossil-fuel based virgin plastic, this packaging update which also reduce Walkers parent company, PepsiCo’s, annual carbon emissions by 465 tonnes.
“We are constantly exploring new scalable solutions and this investment marks an important step forward, delivering a huge reduction in virgin plastic across some of our best-selling ranges, while also helping to tackle our carbon footprint,” PepsiCo UK and Ireland sustainable packaging director, Simon Devaney said.
“Reducing virgin plastic across our supply chain is a key part of our commitment to creating a world where packaging never becomes waste.”
This comes as part of the companies goal to eliminate virgin fossil-based plastic from its crisp and snack bags across Europe by 2030.
